The diet rated high on modern nutrition standards. But seasonal fluctuations in food availability and poor harvests often caused long periods of very poor nutrition. Feast with meats, bread and vegetables such as onions, cabbage, kohlrabi bulbs, root vegetables, beans, peas, greens and artichoke were staples. Fruits (berries) were available only in season and Honey was used to sweeten beverages and breads.
