Description:
IgE is associated with allergies, allergic diseases, and with parasitic infections. It is almost always measured as part of an allergy testing blood panel.

Methodology
Immunoassay

Limitations
Some individuals with allergies have low total IgE but high concentration of allergen-specific IgE and may even suffer anaphylaxis with low to undetectable concentrations of IgE or allergen-specific IgE antibodies.

Clinical Significance
For diagnosis of allergic disease. A normal IgE level does not exclude the possible presence of an allergic disorder.

Alternative Name(s)
Immunoglobulin E
