Harold Baumbach (1904-2002) grew up the son of an upholsterer in New York City. A reluctant, self-taught artist, Mr. Baumbach was inspired by the style of Bonnard and Vuillard, and his figurative work got recognition in the late 1930's. He was fond of landscapes, and his work became increasingly abstract. For twenty years he taught painting at Brooklyn College, and later held a retrospective at their College Museum. In 1992 a painting was shown in the annual exhibition at P.S. 1. His art is being discovered even more widely today, and appreciated for its texture and composition. We are pleased to present from an estate a group of dedicated artist proofs.
