THE ABUNDANT LIFE Benjamin Ide Wheeler 1926 Monroe E Deutsch editor UC Berkeley
Offered is a copy of THE ABUNDANT LIFE Benjamin Ide Wheeler, an illustrated record of a great constructive period in the University of California, embodied in the best writings and public utterances of it's President from 1899 to 1919. Published by the University of California Press, Berkeley, CA in 1926, this book is edited by Monroe E Deutch, there is no copyright page in the traditional sense, so I am not sure how to determine the edition, or printing (I would have no problem believing that this is a first edition, but can't confirm). Dark blue cloth cover the hard boards, with gilt text on the spine; text and the seal of the University of California. Approximately 6 1/2" x 8 3/4" with 385 pages with 16 black and white photographic illustrations. The dust cover is of thin, egg yolk yellow somewhat glossy paper with a photo of President Wheeler and text.
This book has a few issues that should be understood prior to placing a bid: it appears that this book suffered a significant fall, and as a result the upper, outside corner of the pages (though not necessarily the cover boards) have been bent from approximately page 40 through page 285 or so. The last photo provided here is an attempt to show the nature of this damage (I chose one of the worst pages to photograph). The bends do not affect the text, the integrity of any of the pages nor the binding; just an awkward fall in my opinion. In addition, the outside edge (only the opening side, not the top or bottom) of the boards have some wavy texture, both front and back cover, which appear likely to be related to manufacture. There is plenty of shelf wear, mostly on the bottom, from sliding on shelves, a couple of the corners are banged and there is a spot along the edge of the back cover which appears to be paint or something. The top and bottom of the spine show wear and there is an inscription, in pencil, on the front end paper. The pages within are clean, the binding is still tight. The dust cover, unfortunately, is fragile; during the handling of the cover for listing here, the front of the dust cover has separated from the spine, and threatens to come apart at every seam. There are some folds in the paper, small tears and missing chips. The buyer should probably consider a cellophane cover to contain the dust cover.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
