In the summer of 1910 Reginald Farrer - harsh-voiced, excitable, mustached and tending to fat - made a six week journey around the Graian, Cottian and Maritime Alps looking for rare plants. His enthusiasm and exuberance over-rode the difficulties of climbing to 8500 feet without the benefits of modern equipment, and enabled to rejoice at every new botanical discovery. Among the Hills is Farrer's delightful and highly personal account of the journey which gave us the Dianthus neglectus, Aquilegia alpina and other alpine plants now found in every garden.
