During the next decade or two, man will explore planets other than his own. Yet the second half of this century may well be marked by advances no less spectacular in our knowledge of this earth and of man's origins within its history. The race to find "the cradle of humanity", as Professor Bordes explains here, is wide open in Africa, Asia and Europe; while only recently another eminent paleontologist has made finds which are claimed to put back the previous earliest date for man by ten times.
But first define man. Ability to make tools is essential to any such definition; in paleontology tools are dated by t he layer that yields them up. The methods most central to the study of early man therefore concern flint typologies and stratigraphy, as evidence from which conclusions of socio-anthropological kind may be drawn. This book provides an introduction, region by region on today's geographical outlines, to these special aspects and techniques which are applied to the period from the late Tertiary tot he final Wurm ice-age. More than a hundred technical drawings are included as visual aids to this analysis.
