Long before the land of France was inhabited by men, a river flowed through the dense primeval forests of Burgandy and Normandy. Like a serpent, the Seine wound its way to the English Channel slowly and majestically.
As the crow flies, the distance from the source to the mouth is 250 miles; as a fish swims, the distance is 482 miles. William and Roselle Davenport took the route of the fish. They followed the river's course by car, barge, kayak, and on foot, recording its every observable aspect from the arrowheads and reindeer bones left by Magdalenian men to the cranes and bulldozers and oil refineries of the twentieth century.
Paris on the Seine, which reflects the romance and charm of the river - and all the glories of France - provided the longest pause in their journey.
The Seine is a beguiling and fascinating journal. History and legend merge in William Davenport's flowing text, while the wiles and graces of the river are caught in Roselle Davenport's drawings.
