In his youthhe lived in the Slovakian capital Bratislava, where he studied art in school. In1942 he was deported to a concentration camp in Poland. In early 1945 he escaped fromthe camp together with a friend. They hid for weeks in the forests of northernPoland until the area was liberated by troops of the Soviet Red Army. Whenattempting to immigrate without documents to Mandate Palestine, he wasapprehended and sent to the detention camps on Cyprus until in 1948 he reachedIsrael. From 1954 he lived in the Artists' Village at Ein Hod and producedartworks with his wife Rachel. In 1961 Ben Zvi was called upon to testify atthe trial of Adolf Eichman. During various periods at Ein Hod he taughtpainting and handicraft at different schools. He works in many media:sculpture, painting, tapestry, and print.
