Curry leaves grow on a small shrubcommonly found in backyards or gardens around Indianhouses. The leaves are the edible part and they areshiny, dark green, aromatic and slightly bitter intaste. As the colloquial name suggests, these leavesare one of the ingredients of Indian curries, cookedvegetables, salads, chutneys and spices. They add tothe smell and taste of food and in addition to thefood value. Although the leaves are added to Indiandishes as a natural flavoring agent, it is well knownthat they have some medicinal value as well. Curry leaves improve functioning of thestomach and small intestine and promote their action.They improve the quality of digestive juices secretedduring digestion. Their action starts with intake.Their smell, taste and visual impression initiatessalivary secretion and initiates the peristalticwave, which is the first step in good digestion. Theyare mildly laxative and thus can tackle multipledigestive problems caused by food intake. They aredirectly added to food or an extract in the form ofjuice is added to buttermilk and consumed at the endof lunch/dinner. In case of a digestive upset,buttermilk enriched with the paste of curry leaves,common salt and cumin seed powder is recommended.This combination is also useful in problems such asloss of appetite, tastelessness of mouth as in caseof fever etc. where food intake is a problem. Curryleaves are one of the important ingredients of herbaltonics and are parallel to digestive enzymatic tonicsin allopathy. A paste of these leaves with limejuiceand honey/sugar/crystal sugar powder is a time-testedmedicine in the treatment of hyperemesis graviderum.Nausea, dry vomiting, vomiting and food intoleranceare few other conditions where this paste is used asa remedy. Curry leaves have some role in thetreatment of diarrhea, dysentery and idiopathic loosemotions though they are not antidiarrheal in the truesense. A paste of about 8 to 10 fresh,fully-grown curry leaves is to be taken on an emptystomach in the morning for a minimum of 3 months fordesired results. Many people have also reportedweight loss, which is an additional benefit indiabetic people. The bark or root of this plant also hasmedicinal properties. One Ayurveda schoolrecommends powdered root/bark for relief fromkidney/biliary pain. Traditional healers haveobserved some effects on premature graying of hair.Regular intake of these leaves with buttermilk isadvised. Few have tried curry leaves for treatment ofminor burns, bruises, abrasions, etc. and claimbenefits of the treatment. More clinical trials arenecessary to prove effectiveness. Traditional healersin villages use these leaves with a few othermedicinal leaves for the treatment of insect bitesand claim desired results. In this treatment, theseare applied externally in poultice form. In general, curry leaves are usedconfidently in daily cooking without the advice of amedical practitioner.
