How can one live when the old values are discarded and one is forced to pattern life after a new set of values? What if the new values are in direct contradiction to all that has been taught since memory began?

Fannie found out when her husband, Eddie, insisted on leaving the Old Order Amish Mennonite Church for a more liberal one.

Fannie's father, Bishop Mose Bontrager, was an example of a stern, yet kindly, adherent to the Ordnung of the church. Eddie was an example of the progressive young farmers who wanted more modern conveniences than the church allowed. Fannie was caught in the middle with divided loyalties.

Which of two ways was right? or was there a third person to whom a higher loyalty was due in place of the others? Fannie's struggle was desperate before the question was answered
