Kit contents: 6 Viton-GF O-rings for Intake Manifold
Red Eye's newest version are custom made, like everything else on this bike. They are the exact Honda specified size 2.4mm cross section x 29mm ID , same size as 16075-GHB-B70. Instead of nitrile rubber, these are molded to that size from Viton-GF, and they fill the o-ring groove 95% full. This is standard practice, to make room for expansion due to heat and MTBE, methanol, ethanol exposure.
In case you are wondering: Methyl Ethyl Ketone, acetone, lacquer thinner will kill them, and also kill your CV diaphragms.
These Viton GF o-rings will seal better and for a much longer time, no matter what the bizarre fuel with which you accidentally fill up your tank, and no matter how hot your engine gets, and no matter what bike fluid gets sprayed all over them.
Honda sells us nitrile o-rings:
- Temperature Rating: "Forever" at 220F
- Guaranteed Destruction: "30 Minutes" at 300F
The crankcase at the top can reach 218F routinely, and the heads get hotter than that. How much hotter depends on the wind speed. It requires some unknown number of hot days, with stop and go traffic, to make the Honda o-ring harden and stop sealing. The failure is called compression set of the rubber, where the rubber fails to be springy anymore.
Red Eye uses Viton-GF o-rings:
- Temperature rating: "Forever" at 400F
- Observations: Unaffected a couple hours at 450F
- Guaranteed Destruction: "30 minutes" at 500F ouch!
Your engine oil boils below 350F, but the engine will seize up before that. You can't run your engine hot enough to make these o-rings fail. An engine fire would kill these.
