Vahan cites Welch as describing the Society as "secret or semi-secret," and was unable to provide information about the number of chapters or members; it is furthermore left up to individual members as to whether they want to disclose their membership or not. Welch wrote a biography of John Birch(The Life of John Birch), who was an American military intelligence officer and a Baptist missionary in World War II, and purportedly killed by the Chinese Communists; however, Vahan notes that "sixteen years later the Defense Department had still refused to confirm or deny this account of John Birch's death." According to the JBS's foundational document, Welch'sThe Blue Book of the John Birch Society, the JBS operates under "completely authoritative control at all levels". Vahan notes that "The Society says it has evidence that proves conclusively that the nation is heavily riddled with Communists, Communist sympathizers and Communist dupes."Senator Joseph McCarthy was considered by Welch as "one of the great Americans of the twentieth century," "which is why the Communists just had to get rid of McCarthy, and went to such extreme lengths to do so." Welch and the JBS began a campaign to impeach Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, since "Welch opposes Warren bitterly at least in part for the desegregation decisions made by the high court in 1954. Welch feels that this splits the country into warring factions and leaves it wide open to Communists." Of course, the most controversial "early" position of the JBS was its attitude about President Eisenhower (contained in Welch's book The Politician). Welch said about him that "the Communists have one of their own in the presidency ... (and) there is only one possible word to describe his purposes and his actions. That word is treason." Vahan notes that some critics of the JBS have observed "evidence of anti-Catholicism and anti-Jewish feeling... however, it must be stressed that Welch has repeatedly disavowed any anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic belief on his own part or in the official views of the John Birch Society." Although over fifty years old, this book is still a fascinating view of the early days of the JBS. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
