Gantry finds his stride in the tent crusade of hypocritical evangelist Sharon Falconer (probably based on Aimee Semple McPherson). After Falconer dies in a tragic fire, Gantry moves onward to lead ever-bigger methodist congregations. Along the way he wins converts, increases collections, seduces secretaries, and manipulates those around him - though his faith in Jesus remains solid. With Gantry a leading minister in the mythical big city of Zenith, we meet his fellow protestant clergy. Some are admirable, but there aretoo many manipulators, fundamentalist fanatics, plus much professional jealousy. There is also a growing desire for political power, coupled with strong disdain for Catholics, Jews, and immigrants - groups similarly disdained by the Ku Klux Klan, which had over four million members in the 1920's. The book remains remarkably relevant in today's world of televangelists and religious fanaticism.ELMER GANTRY was an instant best-seller in 1927, despite being banned in several cities and denounced from many pulpits. All the more reason to read it. The novel retains a powerful flow.
