Professor Julius Kelp (Jerry Lewis) is a nerdy, klutzy scientist who invents a potion that turns him into the suave, sophisticated Buddy Love. There is a student, Stella Purdy (Stella Stevens) who Professor Kelp has secretly been attracted to and now he feels able to pursue her in the persona of Buddy Love. Although Stella isn’t attracted to Love immediately, she knows there’s just something about him…Professor Kelp discovers there’s a small problem with his formula. He never knows when he’s going to turn back into himself. Although Kelp doesn’t really like the way Buddy Love acts, he keeps rushing back to his lab to turn himself back into his alter ego, because Buddy attracts so much more attention than Julius ever did. On the night of the prom, Buddy is in the middle of giving a speech when he turns back into Julius. Humiliated he admits to what he’s been doing and says he’s learned an awful lot about life through his experiment. Stella tells him that she loves the real Julius more than she ever loved Buddy, and the two tie the knot.
