Minolta Auto Elecroflash 280
MINOLTA AUTO ELECTROFLASH 280 FLASH UNIT, HOT SHOE
Has filter over flash unit also
Classic Minolta auto/manual flash unit with bounce/swivel head and standard hot shoe connection
Original Minolta flashgun
Bounce and swivel head
Four variable auto modes
Full power manual option
Very nicely made in Japan
Standard hot shoe fitting
Interesting and collectable
Trigger voltage around 65v
This is a genuine Minolta Auto Electroflash 280 flash unit, designed for the company's classic manual 35mm SLR cameras such as the SRT303b, but equally usable on many others with a standard hot shoe connection (see below). Please see the Compatibility section below for important safety information, as it has quite a high trigger voltage. It's in good condition, and comes with AA batteries.
The flash head can tilt up to 60 degrees vertically and swivel 180 degrees horizontally, for bounce flash in portrait or landscape orientations. Bounce flash gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. The flash covers lenses as wide as 35mm, or the equivalent on other formats.
Guide number is 28m (91 feet) with ISO 100, for a theoretical maximum range of up to 20m (65 feet) with an f/1.4 lens. As with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. A calculator dial on the rear of the flash includes apertures from f/1.4 to f/22, distances from 0.7 to 15m (2 to 50 feet) and film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400.
Auto or manual exposure control, with four auto ranges. This gives a choice of settings (f/4, f/5.6, f/8 or f/11 with ISO 100) for auto shots to suit the subject, with ranges up to 7m (23 feet). Unusually the auto settings are continuously variable, so you can choose half stops or other settings in between these apertures. Thyristor circuitry for reduced recycling times (or to keep up with auto winders) and more flashes per set of batteries at close distances. The auto sensor on the front of the flash remains pointed at the subject even if the flash is tilted or swiveled, retaining auto exposure for bounce flash. Full power manual operation is also available.
The flash is very solidly made (in Japan) from high quality materials. It measures around 150mm (6 inches) tall on the camera which helps to reduce redeye, and weighs a reassuring 330g without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, and disposable Alkaline (included) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used.
An excellent flashgun for Minolta users and collectors!
CONDITION and ACCESSORIES
Excellent+++ (9/10)
The flash is in very good condition and fully working order. All controls work positively. Cosmetically it shows very little handling marks in the plastic finish. The JCII "Passed" quality control sticker is still in place.
Overall, it's in nice shape!
Pictures in this listing show the actual item offered for sale.
This flash has the once-standard shoe with electrical connection, which fits cameras with a hot shoe, + another shoe (that fits a different shoe -combined). These connections have been fitted to cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even some modern digital cameras.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This type of flash is really designed for manual (mechanical) cameras, and has a trigger voltage of around 65v. This isn't particularly high (we've seen older units with hundreds of volts!), but it shouldn't be used with modern electronic, AF or digital cameras, which typically expect a voltage of around 6v. Some cameras (such as the Fujifilm S602, S602 Pro, S20 Pro and S7000) accept high voltages. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment. Adapters are available (not included) which isolate the trigger voltage and reduce it to safe levels even for these cameras.
