Despite a four-year hiatus between albums, in which grunge, Brit-pop and electronica defined popular music, the Beatles remain Karl Wallinger's muse. EGYPTOLOGY continues his Fab Four fixation, with the Welsh songsmith's solitary studio tinkering yielding tunes like "Call Me Up," with an intro recalling the Beatles' "Good Morning" and baroque touches a la "Penny Lane." But Wallinger's most compelling moments are personal ones.

The beautiful choral rounds of "Interlude" segue into the smashing "Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb" (written after his mother's death) and the lo-fi slant of "Hercules" (an ode to Kurt Cobain). Great imagery coupled with solid hooks and great dynamics easily make "Mummy" Wallinger's finest moment. Add the brass and echoey vocals of the Lee Hazlewood-flavored "Vanity Fair" to the mix, and EGYPTOLOGY becomes the perfect pop package.
