Uranium is imported from Africa even though the Czech mines are far from exhausted. The silver mines are depleted, but the huge coal seams in the East are still productive around the cities of Ostrava and Karvina, called the OKD (Ostrava Karvina District), though pit closures have affected these regions very badly.Item Description VOKD is Výstavba ostravsko-karvinských dolů. which is 'Construction of Ostrava Karvina region Mines'. They were the only company licensed (owned) by the state to construct mines in the region. VOKD would build the lifts, towers and supply equipment to mine the face. They were also involved in the planning stages with the Czech Geological Concern.They were formed in 1951 when the state realised a single company could be formed from the many mine building speciallists in the region.
