Although a TV or standard radio can help in this situation, it is often even better to have a radio dedicated solely for this purpose. This is where the world of the NOAA weather alert radio steps in. Whenever a severe weather watch, advisory or warning is issued, an NOAA alert radio will emit an audible alarm tone, thus informing you that a severe weather alert has been issued. You can then listen to the details of the alert, or some more-advanced models will even print it out on a display screen. Regardless of the method of delivery, an NOAA alert radio is a good thing to have on hand, especially in areas at high-risk of severe weather (Such as "Tornado Alley" in the American midwest).There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different brands, models and types of NOAA alert radios on the market. For this review, I will focus specifically on the Coby CX-WB15Other than the obvious immediate advantage of having a weather alert radio during storm season, the Coby has some other advantages. The first is the fact that it can run from either AC adapter (included), or four AA-size batteries(not included). This means that the Coby isn't tied to a wall socket to function, and that it can still be used during a power failure (Something severe weather often causes).Another plus about the Coby is that it is relatively small and portable. The radio is about the size of a standard VHS video cassette, and weighs only about a pound with batteries. It includes a handle for easy portability, and a telescopic antenna that folds down and out of the way when being moved.A definite pro about the Coby is how easy it is to select the weather band used in your local area. Instead of a weather-dedicated tuning dial that can sometimes be inaccurate or finicky , the Coby has a simple sliding switch on the top that allows you to quickly select from the seven preset, pre-tuned weather bands available. Just set it to the correct band, and nothing else is required.Other than being an NOAA weather alert radio, the Coby can also function as a standard AM/FM radio. Thus, even when severe weather isn't in the forecast, you can continue using it by entertaining yourself or others with your favorite local radio station.The Coby CX-WB15 is a good thing to have on hand during severe weather season.
