It is a frequent feeder on fruits and sap flows from tree wounds. There are several varieties including C. polyphemus polyphemus, C. polyphemus confluens, and C. polyphemus rufuino. The larvae develop in decomposing log compost. The third instar constructs an ovoid cocoon for metamorphosis and attaches it to a solid surface. In captivity, the instar may attach the cocoon to a glass container wall allowing the opportunity to view the transformation. Male and female are similar in overall appearance. The female has a somewhat more shiny surface texture and does not have the horns of the male. Females are typically 45 mm, while males range from 35-80 mm. Common names include Magnificent flower beetle, Giant African fruit beetle. Note: each is handmade so yours may differ slightly but will be similar.***********************************************Please browse through my other listings in my eCRATER store here:http://stores.eCRATER.com/africancraftworkYou will find :Exclusive hand carved Shona Stone sculptures.Musical instruments from Zimbabwe such as drums, mbiras, maracas & marimbas.Wire frame & beaded motorcycles, cars and animals, all hand assembled. An expanding quality selection of baskets and batik wall hangings.Walking sticks, masks and other ethnic curio & artifacts.Thank you!Your browser does not support JavaScript. To view this page, enable JavaScript if it is disabled or upgrade your browser.
