This Was Your War - Stories from WWII by Ernie Pyle, Norman Mailer, Irwin Shaw and others - 1963
“This Was Your War - Great Writings From World War II - From Pearl Harbor to V-E and Y-J Days - From Boot Camp to Battlefield” stories by Ernie Pyle, Norman Mailer, Irwin Shaw, John Steinbeck, James A. Michener, Herman Wouk, Eric Sevareid, A.J. Leibling, Walter Lord, MacKinlay Kantor, and many others; edited by Frank Brookhouser, paperback book published by Dell in 1963, original price 75 cents, 495 pages.
Condition: fair - covers have scuffs/creases/marks, writing on first page, front cover has a small hole (approx ½" x 1"), first 12 pages have water damage/stains, binding solid, some page discoloration from age, no missing pages. The damage only seems to effect the title page/index/introduction pages, otherwise the other pages seem ok considering the age of the book.
“This is an anthology to show the way war was, in all of its many facets, on all of its mant fronts, from the standpoint and viewpoint of the GI; and to show what it meant to the American people in many ways.
“It is a book about men in combat and also simply in the service, with all of their loneliness, boredom, interests, delights, courage, suffering, misery - and day-to-day living. It is also a book about America in the war - here, there, and almost everywhere.
“This huge and panoramic canvas is presented through the great writing about the conflict in all of the varied forms from on-the-spot reporting to novels created more slowly and with deeper thought years after the fighting had ended.”
