Each Brass Rubbing is a hand made original. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS AND ART OF BRASS RUBBINGS THESE RUBBING'S REPRESENT ART HISTORY, DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIODMonumental Brasses were crafted by silversmiths and stonemasons during the Middle Ages, and became the height of fashion in Europe between 1280-1650. They were 'pictures' of actual people, andshow the customs, etc.of the period. To make a rubbing we stretch rag paper over the engraved plate, & use metallic waxcompound'sto rub the image. This is a hand made rubbing of a very unusual engraving of Saint George on horseback, spearing the dragon, his shield bearing a cross. This is the cross of St. George, a red cross on a white field, which formed the flag of England and is incorporated in the Union Jack; created here using metallic gold wax crayon on a special black rag paper.Saint George became patron saint of England and several other countries. The Order of the Garter, founded about 1347 is under his patronage. The facsimilie brass size is 9 1/2" X 9 1/2" and the paper size is 12" X 15" to allow plenty of room for matting and framimg. This plate is a portion of a memorial brass laid down in Elsing in the county of Norfolk, England for Sir Hugh Hastings who was Steward to Edward III's Queen Philippa. Rubbings like this one, hand made by one of our craft instructors, make unusual and interesting gifts.I will send it to you rolled up in a strong postal tube. It can be hung either from wooden dowels or matted and framed under glass. Shipping and handling charges include insurance cover during transit. If you want to buy more than one rubbing from our collection, I would be pleased to arrange a combined shipping charge if the rubbings can be rolled in the same mailing tube. I welcome you to visit my store where I have a wide variety of beautiful rubbings. The Wonders of Britain.
