Based on the true life events of the August 1979 Playboy Playmate, Star 80 focuses on the cautionary tale of Dorothy Stratton (Mariel Hemingway) who, discovered at a young age at a Dairy Queen, is victimized by her hanger-on boyfriend and then husband Paul Snider (Eric Roberts). The story follows Stratton’s naïve rise to fame at the hands of the jealous Snider who at first pushes her towards posing for the nudie magazine and then becomes increasingly territorial and violent as Dorothy outgrows his narrow views. Dorothy’s new and more worldly friends see the dangerous path that Dorothy is on but are unable to stop her from being killed by Snider. All that is left to Dorothy’s conservative small town family is to send a private investigator to help sort out the tawdry details of Dorothy’s murder.
