Three Sackett brothers, Tell (Sam Elliott), Orrin (Tom Selleck) and Ty (Jeff Osterhage) leave their home in Tennessee after the close of the Civil War. They are eager to leave the sight of bitter memories and defeat behind and start anew. Tell heads out first and finds he has a skill for card playing. During a dirty game, a man called Bigelow is accused of cheating. A gunfight ensues and Tell kills him. Meanwhile, Orrin and Ty, trying to avoid a blood feud in their native Tennessee, are making their way west by herding cattle under the close eye of Tom Sunday (Glenn Ford). Eventually, the brothers meet up again. However, the Bigelow brothers want nothing but revenge because of their brother’s death. Now it is the Sacketts against the Bigelows. There can be only one winner.
