Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "RATHER AWKWARD" (#19)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon drawn by F. L. Fithian and features a courting couple spending some quality time with the lady's father.
The back features Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.
SIZE: 3" x 5"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very fine, I'd say. The card is only very lightly soiled with fairly sharp edges and corners. The left portion has a mild rippled feel to it. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

RATHER AWKWARD
Her father sat there for an hour telling funny stories; but Charlie didn't appreciate them as he might
have done had his coat-sleeve not been securely fastened to a pin in the back of her dress.
From Puck, by permission.
