Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "GOOD ADVICE" (#11)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1888 Puck cartoon drawn by A. B. Shults and features a young doctor receiving advice from an older peer who apparently doesn't think too highly of his skills.
The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.
SIZE: 3" x 5"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. This card is only lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and corners. The upper left corn has a very tiny bite out of it and the back carries a bit of relatively clear glue residue. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

GOOD ADVICE
YOUNG PHYSICIAN (who has just lost a patient, to old physician)--"Would you advise an autopsy, doctor?"
OLD PHYSICIAN--"No; I would advise an inquest."
From Puck, by permission.
