Offered is a beautiful antique Austrian porcelain oyster plate.
Well marked on the back as seen in photo 5 which dates this plate to have been produced between 1876-1889 by the Marx & Gutherz porcelain factory.
Oysters were served at formal dinners on fine porcelain oyster plates during the Victorian period.
This lovely antique oyster plate features a scalloped and pearled rim trimed in gold.
It holds 5 oyster and has a center seat to hold lemon. The center well and the 5 oyster wells are also trimmed with gold and have a hand painted smokey grey oyster 'scar' as if you took the oysters out and the little foot is left.
This antique oyster plate is quite the looker and will make a fabulous conversation piece to display or to use for a piece that is up to 134 years old.
It measures almost 8.5 inches in diameter and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks!!
I found a similar oyster plate that was unmarked and lightly trimed in gold that was valued at $295-$325 in 2001.
Our plate is marked and has history, who could have possibly had oysters from this wonderful antique oyster plate!!!
