Once the soil warms and temps are in the 70's, sow seeds 1/4" deep and light cover & tamp down. Or, start inside 5-6 weeks before last frost, using a heat mat. Keep seeds moist until germination, not soggy.
Once the seedlings appear, I fertilize with a 25% solution of fish emulsion (organic) every two weeks until time to transplant into the garden. Then, I do 50%, then full strength. This will not oly help your plants grow, but will protect them from disease.
Be sure to space plants at least 24-36" apart as they will spread and with restricted air flow, diseases can set in.
This is one of my favorite heirlooms, the other is a yellow brandywine.
