The Baths of Caracalla (Italian: Terme di Caracalla) in Rome, Italy, were the second largest Roman public baths, or thermae, built in Rome between AD 212 and 216, during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. The Baths could hold an estimated 1,600 bathers.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) was one of the most renowned painters of late nineteenth-century Britain. He was the most successful artist of the Victorian era. He became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean sea and sky.
