Start Your Own Striking Sweet Pea Garden!
Instructions:
1. Prepare Soil: Use well-draining, fertile soil. Sweet peas prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.0-7.5). Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6-8 inches and incorporate organic matter, such as compost.
2. Soak Seeds: Sweet pea seeds have a hard outer shell. Soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting to improve germination.
3. Start Indoors (Optional): For earlier blooms, start sweet pea seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Use seed trays or small pots filled with seed-starting mix.
4. Plant Seeds: Sow seeds 1 inch deep in the soil. Space seeds 2-3 inches apart if direct sowing outdoors. Water gently after planting.
5. Provide Support: Sweet peas are climbing plants and need support. Install trellises, netting, or stakes at the time of planting.
6. Transplant: Once seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Space plants 6 inches apart.
7. Provide Sunlight: Sweet peas prefer full sun to light shade. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
8. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water sweet peas regularly, especially during dry periods.
9. Fertilize: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Follow package instructions for dosage.
10. Pinch Back: Pinch back the growing tips of young plants to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.
11. Deadhead: Remove spent flowers (deadheading) to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.
