  • Description
This is Oroxylum indicum, also known as Midnight Horror, Broken Bones Plant, Indian Trumpet Flower, and Tree of Damocles. This tree can grow up to 60 feet high and likes to live in full sun or partial shade. The leaf stalks fall off and gather in clumps. This sight gives it the nickname broken bones. The fragrant flowers are pollinated by bats. The colors of the blossoms change between pink, rose, mauve, cream, and tan. The fruits and seedpods can grow up to 5 feet long. They look like hanging swords and this is what gives it many other nicknames. The leaves, stems, and young seed pods are all edible. USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11.
