“I want to begin by expressing our grief at the loss of three Gay film stars whose lives were snuffed out by AIDS. LUKE (Phillip Wagner) died on June 20th at 29. From his debut in Falcon's "Ticket Home" to his final and most creative work with the immortal Jack DeVeau in Hand-in-Hand's "Boys of Riverside Drive" and "Times Square Strip" he was a total joy. His obit in UPDATE quotes him as calling himself "the Carol Burnett of porn". Of his career "I just like dressing Up --- I never want to bore the audience. I keep giving them a new show and let my imagination run amok. No more discretion for me. I just do it, and in the process I'm trying to find out who I am. Very much loved is who he was and very much missed is who he is. Then on July 17 we lost JESSE KOEHLER (Richard Kunze) at age 32. His films included "Rangers", "Boystown", "Getting It*, "King Size" and "Hard Disk Drive". He started in '82 and over 6 years did 29 films. We extend our sympathy to his mate, Daniel Sabin, and his young son, Donald. Fans can honor his memory with a (tax deductible - if you're tasteless enough to care) contribution to the Richard Kunze - Jesse Koehler Art Supply Fund, Brownlie Hospice, 1300 Scott St., LA, CA 90026. The money is used for art supplies for residents. Finally on July 25th, this ghastly summer, we lost JOHNNY DAWES (Brian Lee) at age 34. His film debut was in '71 in "Bad, Bad Boys". I remember his sexy face in ads for the films and going to the theatre to see it. Over the next 10 years he did 24 films/videos including "Doing It", "Skin Deep", "Revenge of the Nighthawk" "Knockout"' and "Hardline". Brian also did photography and acted in mainstream stage productions. He had a role as a Soviet spy in the film "The Domino Principle" and at the time of his death was signed for a role in "Silent Night, Deadly Night Pt. 3". The icing on the cake is that the one and only person from the nightmare years of Reagan who cared about ending AIDS and saving lives, Dr. C. Everett Koop, was shafted by Bush and has left his post as Surgeon General. His tireless work on AIDS, the devastation wrought by alcohol & tobacco, ending abortion though contraceptives, among the many topics has won him the love and respect of all decent Americans and the wrath of the cancer known as the far right. That Bush cares more about pleasing the far right than he does about the American people speaks volumes.

He has our endless respect and best wishes as he continues the fight against these plagues in speeches, articles & books. Dr. Koop is one of most priceless national treasures!

Update: as we go to press the status of the 1988 CHILD PROTECTION & OBSCENITY ENFORCEMENT ACT is appeal.

A district court in D.C. struck down the law, based on part of the record keeping provision. The Justice Dept. waited till the last day it could, then filed an appeal. Until all appeals are finished (meaning until it hits the Supreme Court) it can not be enforced. The courts have been in recess and just came back in Sept. so things are in limbo. OUTCOME, and other mags with brains, are acting as if the law is active.

Some fools have convinced themselves the district court ruling means it's all over: it isn't! If the far & ultra far right members of the Court decide to issue verdict based on personal feelings and not the Constitution the law could be ruled constitutional and would go into effect retroactively and those burying their heads in the sand will be swept away. If Democracy wins and the law is finally struck down, some far right Congressmen have declared they will make some changes and re-introduce the law. OUTCOME asks that you take the time to write your Congressman & Senators and make your feelings known!
