This autobiography of one of ballet's most talented stars tells Robert La Fosse's story from his beginning as a corps dancer in 1977, through his eight-year rise as Mikhail Baryshnikov's protege, to his present position with the New York City Ballet.
“As a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, Robert La Fosse has mesmerized audiences and critics as one of ballet's most talented performers. Nothing to Hide is a searing and candid autobiography about an extraordinary life that, until now, has never been publicly revealed.
From his auspicious beginning as a corps dancer in 1977 at American Ballet Theatre, to his eight-year rise as Mikhail Baryshnikov's protégé, La Fosse's success in the world of dance seemed assured. He danced with the world's great ballerinas, including Gelsey Kirkland, Natalia Makarova, Cynthia Gregory and Cynthia Harvey, and worked with the world's most renowned choreographers, including Baryshnikov, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins.
But there were also problems. A serious love affair began to fall apart, and the perfection La Fosse constantly strove for in every aspect of his dancing would not come. He was a star, but unlike most stars, he found the mirror, once his friend, now an enemy.
He was relentlessly demanding of himself, but the harder he pushed himself the further away perfection seemed.
Finally, the pressure took its toll. La Fosse suffered a traumatic fall from the pedestal he had placed himself on. Overnight he plummeted from stardom to self-imposed…
