This is a rare UNREAD vintage and out of print copy of TOMORROW'S MAN Lynn Valley 9, by Veralyn Behenna (Author), Jack Pierson (Editor, Artist), Roger Bywater (Editor) and published and distributed by Presentation House Gallery & Bywater Bros. Editions; Limited edition of 1000 copies. This 84 page SOFTCOVER book measures 7 x 0.25 x 10 inches. See photos for condition.
Tomorrow’s Man, Lynn Valley 9, combines familiar imagery from American photographer Jack Pierson’s (born 1960) vast archive--portraits, vintage Physique magazines, celebrity promo shots and oddball ephemera--with work from an eclectic range of contributors such as Andy Warhol, Mark Morrisroe, David Carrino, Florence Derive, Alex Jovanovich, Dan McCarthy, Ryan Sullivan, Evan Whale, Jeff Elrod, Hugo Guinness, Jimmy Paul, Channing Tatum, Richard Tinkler and others, as well as a short story by Veralyn Behenna entitled “The Lobster.” Utilizing an unconventional design layout in which imagery has been dropped in with a complete disregard for page breaks and centerfolds, this compendium quickly establishes itself as something other than a straightforward photo book: its scrapbook-style design and diverse imagery presents Pierson as an inventive, irreverent editor and bookmaker with a great eye for unexpected, fun juxtapositions.
REVIEWS
As an artist, Jack Pierson has never limited himself, working in collage, photography, and sculpture, among other media. His new book, Tomorrow's Man, Lynn Valley 9 (Bywater Bros.), brings it all together in a scrapbook-style treatise on masculinity, culled from Pierson's prodigious archive. Featuring his portraiture, tears from vintage muscle magazines, various ephemera, and contributions from the likes of Jeff Elrod, Channing Tatum, and a short story from conventions of the photo book, disregarding page breaks and centerfolds and using collage to create an irreverent free-flowing visual experience. (Kelsey Colleen Interview)
Jack Pierson, whose wok often riffs on or includes pop-culture ephemera, combines a scrapbook full of it with his own photography and work by other artists in Tomorrow's Man, issue #9 of the Vancouver-based art journal Lynn Valley (Presentation House/Bywater Bros.). He borrows his title from a '50s physique magazine, and pages of near-naked muscle boys torn from those publications give the book a teasingly erotic underpinning, picked up in images of teen idols Ricky Nelson and James Dean and their contemporary equivalent, Channing Tatum. The format overlaps postcards, sheet music, tear sheets, and snapshoots in a visual stream of consciousness that ingludes Taylor and Burton on the cover of Whisper, a Sam Cooke publicity glossy, Judy Garland, radial tires, and exotic birds. (Vince Aletti Photograph Magazine)
