Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100 - c. 170) - late Hellenistic astronomer, astrologer, mathematician, mechanic, optician, music theorist and geographer. Lived and worked in Alexandria of Egypt, where he conducted astronomical observations. The important work of Ptolemy in the middle of the 2nd century AD - Guide to Geography is a collection of knowledge about the geography of everything known to the ancient peoples of the world. In his treatise, Ptolemy laid the foundations of mathematical geography and cartography. Published the coordinates of eight thousand points from Scandinavia to Egypt and from the Atlantic to Indochina; this is a list of cities and rivers with their geographic longitude and latitude. On the basis of extensive and carefully collected information, Claudius Ptolemy also completed 27 maps of the earth's surface, which have not yet been discovered and may have been lost forever. The Ptolemaic maps became known only from later descriptions. Despite the inaccuracy of this information and maps, compiled mainly from the stories of travelers, they first showed the vastness of the inhabited regions of the Earth and their interconnection.
