From his start posing for Al Urban the photographer known as CHAMPION was a dominant force in Gay male erotica. He began in the 1950s as TAKE ONE. Then came MASTER PHYSIQUE and the discovery of his most famous model, JIM STRYKER. These were the days we now know as the PHYSIQUE era when no full frontal nudity was allowed and photographers had to be creative & really use their imaginations to create the erotic. The models were superb & primarily hetero - no full frontals made it ok to pose without harassment. Champ was a pioneer who pushed limits. Genitals had to be covered, BUT, the law didn't say by what. Champ used sheer and see-thru materials to remain within the law while letting us see models hidden assets. The right wingers and clergy (pause for laughter) brought about his arrest via the postal authorities (even photographers who used opaque materials & did pix that could appear in any of today's clothing mail order catalogs). The judge ruled in Champion's favor saying he did indeed follow the law & cover genitals. In time thanks to CHAMPION's courage full frontal nudity was made legal. While all this went on he started the SUNSHINE BEACH CLUB, a nude photo studio based at photographer Dick Falcon's nudist beach in Florida. As we all know from watching "MASH" you could publish full frontal nudes as part of a nudist colony publication. When the court cleared the way he then became CHAMPION. Along the way he had Treasure House of European Models. T.H.E.M. was devoted to the models he photographed in Europe. Champ's models were always athletic young men who exuded, using President Kennedy's term, VIG- A. He had a great talent to turn his apartments into bunkhouses, locker rooms, etc. 6 to find great props & costumes to dress the sets. CHAMPION was G is synonymous with all things masculine! He retired in 1973 just as the national Gay press was starting G only did pix for himself. In 1980 he again got the yen to work & began a new series. He ceased creating sets, in fact he paid no attention to background, & concentrated on the erotics of clothing. Models wore sports clothes & shot big gooey wads of cum. They masturbated with jock straps, sox, women's nylons, jockey shorts. They sniffed used jock straps, sox, sneakers, etc. The work was carefully planned & lovingly executed but the golden days of photo sets had passed & video was becoming king. In 1985 Champ realized the days of the great artists was over. There were more schlock no talents than artists and so he retired & turned the studio over to his close friend MAN-AGE. MAN-AGE has now too closed shop but has given us the ok to publish a new series of CHAMPION mags.
