Ammonium oxalate monohydrate is a white, odorless, crystalline, hygroscopic, water-soluble salt. One principal use of ammonium oxalate is in the controlled production of calcium oxalate to generate an acid resistant, protective coating for construction stones (limestone, marble, and calcareous sandstone artefacts) and plaster [Mundronja D. Applied Physics (2013) 111: 109-119]. The displacement reaction between ammonium oxalate and calcium carbonate to form calcium oxalate is the premise on which this treatment is based. Ammonium oxalate is also used in to manufacture explosives, industrial dyes, buffering agents, and polishing substances. Such uses can be generally summarized as:
• Decalcification agent
• Surface treating agent for limestone, marble, and calcareous sandstones
• Ferrous iron extraction agent
• Protection of monumental limestone
• Anticoagulant
• Analytical reagent
• Reducing agent
• Precipitant
