The Wild poinsettia is an annual plant (perennial zones 8+) with upright stems that have medium green, fiddle-shaped leaves and colorful flower clusters. The flower clusters have bright red and green bracts that surround the true flowers, which are tiny and green and are in small, cup-shaped inflorescences. The inflorescences have a large nectar gland that produces nectar for bees and other insects. It is a true Poinsettia and was classified as Poinsettia cyathophora until Poinsettia was merged with Euphorbia. It is native to the southeastern United States and tropical America.
The preference is full or partial sun, moist to dry-mesic conditions, and a rather infertile soil containing sand, gravel, or rocky material. However, this plant can adapt to more fertile soil containing loam or clay-loam if competition from other ground vegetation is reduced.
