SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon drawn by L. Dalrymple and features an aggressive salesman using a country merchant's chimney to make an after-hours sales pitch.

The back shows the Arbuckles' factory buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. This card is lightly soiled with generally only slightly worn edges and corners. The bottom edge has a bit of roughness near the center and there's a very tiny crease at the upper left corner. The back has a faint oil spot near the top center. (Please see scans.)
