This Honeysuckle is an extremely vigorous twining and trailing woody vine which typically grows 15-30' feet. Hardy to zones 4-9. It's flowers are edible and valued for it’s medicinal properties. Flowers can be dried and used for tea. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, Japanese honeysuckle is said to be useful in treating fevers, sore throats, and has been used in suppressing influenza.
It blooms throughout the entire growing season. The flowers start out white, sometimes tinged with purple, and age to yellow in their second day. The flowers are extremely fragrant, appearing from May to frost and give way to black berries which mature in late summer to fall. It grows quickly on a trellis or fence, to provide a sweetly-fragrant screen for privacy or shade. The flowers attract hummingbirds and bees. Grow in a controlled area, such as patio containers or as bonsai as it can be quite aggressive in some areas.
