Contents: This book chronicles the story of the gold found in the sands of Nome beach, thought to have washed up onto the beach from the Bering Sea. As it turned out the gold had been washed down from the eroded tundra and concentrated in places on the beach. Thousands of people went to Nome in the summer of 1900, each with a sure-fire scheme to get at the "countless millions" which were supposed to be in the beach sands and at the bottom of the Bering Sea. As a result the Nome beach was littered for miles that summer with monstrous-looking Rube Goldberg machines built to extract the gold from the ocean. The Nome News said it was the greatest assemblage of "jackass" mining machinery ever seen. Illustrated with photographs.
