Without warning, Soviet missiles explode over North America. Within minutes the US counterstrike is launched. There is no second strike -- no one is left with the authority to order it. Thirty-six minutes after it began, the first nuclear war in history is over: Six million Americans are dead; dead also are three major American cities and much of the western lands that housed our ICBM fields. In the next five years, seventy million have died of war-related causes. Warday was merely a flicker of hell. What remains are consequences.
