  • Description
Description: Here's an interesting vintage standard-sized matchbook cover advertising The Mutual Life Insurance Co., of New York. It features a drawing of the company's building on the front and a color guide to the "Weather Star Forecast Signals" from atop the building's antenna mast on the back.

The inside provides more details about the "MONY Weather Star Signals" which showed "Not What the Weather is . . . But what it's going to be". Green meant "Fair", Orange meant "Cloudy", Flashing Orange meant "Rain", and Flashing White meant "Snow". Additional weather forecast information could be discerned from the mast's lights. When they "Move Up", it means "Warmer". If they "Move Down" it means "Colder", and if they're "Steady", it means "No Change".

Produced by Lion Match Co., N.Y.

Actual Size: approx. 2" x 1.5" (closed)

Date: Not dated, but appears to be from the 1950s, or thereabouts.

Condition: Just good, I'd say. The cover is somewhat scuffed and soiled, and the striker shows at least some usage. There's also additional damage to the striker strip area, likely from the removal of the staple that held the matches, along with an additional pinhole which goes through the striker strip and both sides of the cover. (Please see scans.)
