WARD'S SERVICE, Skelly Gasoline - Norton, Kansas - 1950s(?) Matchbook Cover
Description: Here's a standard-sized matchbook cover advertising Ward's Service, which sold Skelly Gasoline in Norton, Kansas. The place offering "Washing & Lubrication" and stated that it had "38 Years In the Oil Business". When this matchbook was produced it had just a 3-digit phone number, "157".
There's no printing on the inside.
Produced by Chicago Match Co., Libertyville, Ill.
Actual Size: approx. 2" x 1.5" (closed)
Date: Not explicitly dated, but with that 3-digit phone number, I'd think it must be from the 1950s or earlier. (That "38 years in business" statement should also help date it with a little research.)
Condition: Very good, I'd say. The cover is a just a bit soiled, with some extraneous paper stuck on the inside. It doesn't look like the striker strip has ever been used. It appears that the original staple was removed and replaced when the matches and stubs were taken out. Additionally, there's a small pinhole that passes through the top of the striker strip and the front and back covers. (Please see scans.)
(NOTE: What appears to be a large scrape obliterating the word "Use" on the back of the cover, next to the Skelly logo, is actually just a blank patch that didn't get any ink during the original printing. That also goes for the small blank circle.)
**NOTE**: Shipping charges are discounted when more than one of my items are purchased at the same time. See what else I have to offer!
