THE WONDERFUL CITY OF CARRIE VAN WIE O Lewis 1963 San Francisco Paintings HC/DC
Offered is a very rare copy of Oscar Lewis' 1963 book, THE WONDERFUL CITY OF CARRIE VAN WIE: Paintings of San Francisco at the Turn of the Century with Text by Oscar Lewis. Carrie Van Wie's paintings of San Francisco scenes are reproduced in full-page color from watercolor drawings, the blocks engraved by Mary Grabhorn and printed over collotype plates. This was the Book Club of California's 1963 Christmas offering which celebrated forty years of collaboration between Oscar Lewis, the Grabhorn Press and the Club. Van Wie (1880-1947), born in San Francisco, was a self-taught artist. Her works include watercolors and oils of historic sites in her native city where she spent her entire life, such as the Cliff House and Fort Point. A coffee table book, approximately 15" x 10 3/8" unpaginated (54 pp); 21 color plates, and 21 corresponding pages of descriptive text; Folio. title page, 14 pp. of preliminary matter.
This copy is in very good condition, the binding tight and pages clean. There is a little darkening, nothing too significant, on the end papers where the plain brown wrapper came in contact, see the last photo for detail. The plain brown wrapper, which is present, is fairly shelf worn, especially at the bottom where there are lots of small wrinkles and one tear (2 1/8"). In addition, the wrapper has a couple of stains, one which appears to be an oil mark. There are also some small rust colored spots in the linen along the spine viewable from the outside, foxing perhaps.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
