LIFE OF PHILLIPS BROOKS Aug 1930 William Lawrence First Edition HC/DC
Offered is a copy of William Lawrence' 1930 publication, second in a series called Creative Lives (edited by Harold E. B. Speight, M.A., D.D.), entitled LIFE OF PHILLIPS BROOKS. According to the dust cover, this book studies the life of a man who graduated Harvard, failed as a teacher in the Latin school, and then undertook a seminary school in a southern city. By 28 he was a leading preacher and citizen of Philadelphia at the time of the Civil War, went on to serve as rector of Trinity Church, Boston, preacher at Harvard, and later Bishop of Massachusetts; at the time a leader in the spiritual thought of this country and England. The book has very dark blue cloth covered boards, with gilt text decorating the spine, a gilt signature on the front cover. The only illustration is a black and white photo of Brooks adjacent to the title page. This is a stated first edition, and using a first edition guide we are told the publishing date is August 1930. Approximately 5 1/4" x 7 1/2" with 151 pages, a robin egg blue dust cover is part of the package.
The book itself is in very good condition; very little wear on the cover, the gilt is in fairly good condition. The top and bottom of the spine are bent inward toward the book. There is an inscription and a book plate on the inside front end paper. The pages show a little age, but are fairly bright and clean, the binding is good but not as tight as it once was; if one opens the book randomly the book falls open at about page 73, which seems to be the weakest spot. This is not to say the binding is loose, just aging. The dust cover has seen better days, discolored at the spine and bent edges, with the expected small bends, rips and missing chips - please see the provided photos for more detail.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
