MARGARET OGILVY BY HER SON J M BARRIE 1897 Early Edition Hardbound Scribner
Offered is an early edition/printing of the book MARGARET OGILVY BY HER SON J M BARRIE, the son who would become famous for creating Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up. Light grey covers the boards and spine, the front was decorated with a pattern of embossed light color with gilt dots framing the title text; the spine with gilt text and pattern. Barrie was a Scotsman, and the pattern may be stylized thistles. Approximately 4 3/4" x 7 1/16" with 207 pages, the only illustration is the frontispiece. The upper edge of the pages is smooth, with gilt covering, the other sides are very irregular. This is an 1897 printing of an 1896 book.
The book shows some age: It had been part of a collection held by the Adelphian Club, part of a private circulating library of this social organization, and so has the club name stamped, along with book classification in a few places. Interesting that there is a note on the front end paper that tells us that the book was purchased April 26, 1897. There is some foxing on the top gilt, and some on the back end paper, and in a couple of other spots within. The pages are free of writing or marks other than the ones described, the binding is still fairly good.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
