DRAWINGS OF ALBRECHT DÜRER Heinrich Wölfflin Introduction 1970 Paperback 10th ed
Offered is a paperback copy of the book DRAWINGS OF ALBRECHT DÜRER with 81 selected illustrations and with an introduction by Heinrich Wölfflin, translated by Stanley Appelbaum and with a new foreword by Alfred Werner. The paper cover has an illustration on the front in sepia tone with black drawing, the back white with text, the spine of raw umber (perhaps the result of sun fading) with text; the inside of the covers both front and back tell of other offerings from Dover Books. Approximately 8 1/8" x 11" with 17 pages of preface including a frontispiece, the title page, the foreword, a bibliographical note, and a list of plates followed by 17 pages of the introduction by Wölfflin, then 80 more illustrations preceded in each case by a page with notes (The notes from one illustration on the back of the next).
This book shows some wear, though the binding is tight. There is a little pricing, in pencil, on the first page, but the other pages seem clean. The cover is of paper that was laminated of some cellophane material which is coming loose from the paper causing some bubbles and loose areas and hangs a little tattered, which I'm afraid doesn't show very well in the photos provided. There is a hard bend in the front cover in the upper corner. The edges of the cover and corners show wear: small bends, rubbing and at least one small tear. The lower corners of the book have some bending which affects a few of the inner pages.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!

Originally published in Munich in 1914, this selection of Albrecht Durer's finest drawings by the great art historian Heinrich Wofflin has long been regarded as a basic book in the arts. It has gone through many editions in Europe, even though this is its first appearance in English.Professor Wofflin selected 81 drawings by the master both for their individual interest and for the light they cast on Durer's artistic growth and evolution. They begin with the self-portrait Durer drew at the age of 13 in 1484 and end with his Head of Saint Mark, done in 1526, approximately two years before his death. Included are many favorites as well as many works that are little known. Of special interest are sketches that Durer prepared for famous works in other media, such as drawings for the famous woodcut series "The Life of the Virgin."Professor Wofflin's penetrating essay, which is considered one of the foundations of modern art criticism, has been translated by Stanley Appelbaum.Several features have been added to this Dover edition of Durer's drawings: a revised statement on ownership of originals; bibliographical note; Winkler numbers; and a new Foreword by Alfred Werner, art critic and lecturer.
