THE CROSSING 1904 Winston Churchill 1st ed. Sydney Adamson Lilian Bayliss HC
Offered is a copy of American writer Winston Churchill's 1904 best-selling novel THE CROSSING, this copy a hardbound first edition/first print including illustrations by Sydney Adamson and Lilian Bayliss. A portion of the book first appeared December 1903 in Collier's under the title The Borderland. The last of Churchill's sweeping historical novels, the plot concerns the westward expansion of the United States, including the settlement of Kentucky. Dark brown cloth covers the boards and spine, with gilt text and borders decorating the front and spine. Approximately 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" with 598 pages, gold gilt on the tops of the pages.
This book is 110 years old, and shows some of its age. It had been part of a collection held by the Adelphian Club, part of a private circulating library, and so has the club name written along with book classification in a few places. The hinges seems a little weak, I have included a picture of the back, the most affected, here, but the front hinge is not all that tight; the binding is still viable, but is not as strong as it once was. The corners are banged, and along with the spine, show considerable wear, at the bottom the corner cloth is worn through. Some kind of lacquer was used on the outside of the book, a few patches of the finish is weak/missing. The gilt is still pretty strong. Overall, not too bad, but the book does show its age.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
