CALIFORNIA Its History and Romance John S. McGroarty HC 1911 Illustrated Scarce
For sale is a copy of John McGroarty's 1911 book CALIFORNIA Its History and Romance. Hard cover, without a dust cover, red cloth covered boards, gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Approximately 6 1/2" x 9 5/8", with 393 pages, illustrated, with an index and appendices. Appears to be a first edition, though I can't be sure.
This book has a few condition issues that the buyer should know about: the gilt lettering is pretty tarnished, it appears that the inside portion/first page of the front end paper has been torn out, the binding is exposed at this point (see the last provided photo for details). There is some foxing around the front and back of the book, and adjacent to photos in the book. The binding is a little loose in spots (exposing binding), particularly near the photo illustrations, the front and back of the book. Even with the issues noted, the binding seems sound, there are no loose pages. The cover shows wear at the spine corners and along the bottom, the outer corners all have been banged or show rubbing. There is a spot on the back cover, looks like maybe some white paint or something which was quickly wiped off. In the front of the book is a price in pencil, and a note "1911 Scarce", the back end paper also has some pencil marks.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering this book!
