Lot Red Lion Picture and MEF Sampler from The Essamplaire
A lovely early 18th century English provincial tent stitch picture. The large flowers on the right and the chunky block shading is reminiscent of the treatment done on other pastoral pieces of this period. The oak tree, spotted dog, red lion, and feline form on right (possibly a panther) are all stitched in tent stitch, as is most of the background although one area is worked in queen stitch and another uses silk chenille which is couched down.. MEF (1762)
A colorful sampler from the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. Many of the Friesian samplers were worked in a horizontal format with several alphabet styles across the top… The Friesians were sailors and this is depicted by the ship. The number of people pictured on the ship generally denoted the members of the family and this one had four, 2 females, 2 males and a dog. If one of the people was laying down, it meant they had died. The spinning monkey symbolizes all undesirable characteristics in us. She used various types of motifs including trees of life, eight pointed stars, furniture, birds and beasts and a horse and cart. This sampler uses mainly cross stitch with Algerian eye and double running stitches. From theessamplaire.com
